Renewals due this winter: PT and PTA deadlines from December to February
The PT boards of Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kansas and Minnesota set statewide renewal deadlines that fall due by December 31, 2026, and those of Delaware, North Carolina, North Dakota and Oklahoma, with Ohio for PTAs, set January 31, 2027. West Virginia, Missouri and New Mexico use a December, January or February date in the year your own license is due, and OT and SLP licenses follow their own boards, linked beside each state below.
Which PT and PTA renewals fall due by December 31, 2026?
- Hawaii: “All licenses regardless of issuance date, are subject to renewal by December 31, every even-numbered year,” which makes it December 31, 2026. Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- Pennsylvania: “Licenses expire December 31 of every even-numbered year,” so December 31, 2026. Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- Virginia: a PT or PTA renews “biennially by December 31 in each even-numbered year,” so December 31, 2026. Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- Kansas: the PT license and PTA certificate “shall expire on December 31 of each year.” Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- Minnesota: PTs and PTAs apply “before January 1 each year” to extend the license. Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
Each date is the board’s own words, from its rule or renewal page; the sources are listed at the end.
Which fall due by January 31, 2027?
- Delaware: “Licenses expire on January 31 of odd years,” so January 31, 2027. Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- North Carolina: renewal is every year, online, from November 1 to January 31. Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- North Dakota: “Licenses not renewed annually by January thirty-first will expire.” Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- Oklahoma: “all licenses shall expire on January 31 of each year.” Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- Ohio: the board lists the PTA renewal period as February 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027, and the PT period as February 1, 2026 to January 31, 2028, so this winter is a PTA renewal. Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
Which winter deadlines depend on your own license?
Some boards set a December, January or February date but tie the year to your own license, so this winter is a renewal only if your license is due this cycle.
- West Virginia: “Renewals begin October 1 and end December 31 in the year your license is due to expire.” The board adds: “There is no grace period for renewals.” Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- Missouri: the rule has you renew “before January 31 of the year the license is due for renewal.” Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
- New Mexico: “Licenses will expire on February 1 following no more than two years of licensure.” Boards: PT, OT, SLP.
Two more boards use a winter date on a fixed schedule that does not fall this winter. Georgia’s rule sets renewal “by December 31st of odd years,” so the next is December 31, 2027 (boards: PT, OT, SLP). New Jersey’s licenses “expire every two years on January 31 of any even-numbered year,” so the next is January 31, 2028 (boards: PT, OT, SLP).
If a winter renewal overlaps a contract you are weighing, and you want the dates set side by side, ask a ProTherapy recruiter: Find my next contract.
How do you check your own renewal date?
Start with the board that issued the license, not a summary of it. FSBPT’s Licensure Reference Guide lists PT renewal terms state by state, and itself points to each jurisdiction as the source for its own rules.
Then sort your licenses into two kinds. Where a board sets one statewide date, such as Pennsylvania or Oklahoma, the rule above is your date. Where the date follows your own cycle, such as West Virginia, Missouri or New Mexico, the year comes from your own license record with that board. This list covers PT and PTA dates, which the PT boards publish; an OT or SLP license renews on its own board’s schedule, linked beside each state, and this site’s state pages list every discipline’s board.
What has to be done before you renew?
Some boards tie continuing education to the renewal itself. Georgia’s rule, for one, has each PT and PTA “submit proof of continuing competency requirements and pay a renewal fee by December 31st of odd years.” The hours, the cycle each state counts them over and the first-renewal exemptions differ by board; the PT continuing-education table by state sets out each from the board’s own pages.
So for a winter renewal, check that the CEUs the board asks for fall inside its window, and keep the certificates with your license records.
What happens to PT Compact privileges when your home license renews?
A compact privilege runs on your home state license. The PT Compact Commission: “All compact privileges expire on the same date as the home state license that was in effect on the date the individual purchased the compact privilege.” It adds that “The licensee must renew their home state license before they can renew the compact privilege if they want to continue practicing in that remote state.”
The order is set out on its renewal page: “The earliest you can renew a compact privilege is 60 days before the expiration date of the compact privilege. You must first renew your home state PT/PTA license and the PT Compact Commission must receive the updated expiration date from the state board. It can take up to seven (7) days for the Commission to get the updated expiration date.” So if your home state license is due this winter, the privileges bought under it expire on the same date unless the license, and then each privilege, is renewed. This site’s PT Compact guide covers the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Do OT and SLP licenses renew on the same date as PT in these states?
Not necessarily. This list records PT and PTA dates from the physical therapy boards. OT and SLP licenses renew on their own boards’ schedules, and each state on the list links to its OT and SLP boards for their dates.
If my home state license renews this winter, when can I renew a PT Compact privilege?
After the home state license renews and the PT Compact Commission has the new expiration date, which the Commission says can take up to 7 days. The earliest a privilege can be renewed is 60 days before it expires, and it expires on the same date as the home state license it was bought under.
How do I know which year my license is due?
Where a board sets one statewide date, such as Hawaii’s December 31 of even-numbered years, the rule gives the year. Where the date follows your own cycle, as in West Virginia, Missouri and New Mexico, the year comes from your own license record with that board, the source FSBPT itself points to.
