Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Travel Licensing

Everything travel PTAs need to know about national certification, state-by-state licensure, interstate compact privileges, and tips for multi-state practice.

National Certification

🎓 Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT)

Required exam: NPTE-PTA (National Physical Therapy Examination for PTAs)

The NPTE-PTA is required for PTA licensure in all US states. PTAs work under the supervision of a PT — supervision requirements vary by state and setting, so review the specific rules for each state you practice in.

State Licensing Process

Travel PTAs must navigate the same multi-state licensing requirements as PTs, plus understand supervision ratio rules in each state. The PT Compact covers both PTs and PTAs.

1. Pass national exam

Complete NPTE-PTA (National Physical Therapy Examination for PTAs) with a passing score. Official score reports are sent directly to state boards in most cases.

2. Choose your home state

Your first license is your "home state" license for compact purposes. Choose wisely — ideally a compact member state with fast processing.

3. Apply for endorsement

Each additional state requires an endorsement application. Gather all required documents before submitting — incomplete apps cause delays.

4. Activate compact privileges

If PT Compact covers PTAs in member states, activate compact privileges in member states instead of completing full applications.

Interstate Compact Status

PT Compact covers PTAs in member states

PTAs are covered under the PT Compact — the same compact that covers PTs. PTAs holding a license in a compact home state can activate compact privilege in other member states. Check PTCompact.org for current membership.

Multi-State Licensing Tips

  • Understand supervision requirements before accepting assignments — ratios vary by state
  • Confirm PT Compact coverage for PTAs with your specific home state
  • Apply for state licenses early — same timelines apply as for PTs
  • Review state-specific practice acts for any PTA-specific restrictions
  • Track CE requirements — some states have PTA-specific requirements
